ACADEMIC TOOLBOX NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2009

Hello everyone, especially all the new folks that were first timers in our store for back to school.  I have to admit this was the strangest August we have had to date.  We had lots of new customers buying in different patterns.  First time I remember in 10 years, being out of plan books completely, but thank goodness only for about 3 days.  Sharon and I took a Saturday and Sunday to attend the Toy & Gift Show in Seattle.  Sharon found some items she liked and they would all be here by now except that her husband the Grinch (me) kept reminding her that we have to "buy" the merchandise not just order it.  She did great though and managed to get some terrific items that we will be highlighting each month.  Only going to tell you one family story this month, a quick one.  My little granddaughter Holly, when she first climbed into my lap at age two after arriving from China, made me feel special so I gave her a nickname, Holly Berry, not only because it was Christmas time but because she was beautiful ala Halle Berry the actress.  Well, my daughter writes that Sunday morning she asked, "What does Holly Berry want for breakfast?"  Holly, who is very dramatic, indignantly replied, "Only Papa can call me Holly Berry!"  Way to go girl!

DRAWING WINNER

This month the winner is Kristen Peirce.  She wins $25 to use here in the store.  She redeemed her frequent shopper card in August to receive 20% off of her total purchase.

NEW PRODUCTS

Two new books about Kokopelli written by Michael Sterns are adventure books designed for family reading together.  The books are almost 12 inches wide so families sitting on the couch can all feel close.  The illustrations are full page and alternate from left page to right so no one has a bad seat.  It also allows for the readers to easily take turns.  The books are longer than most illustrated books to encourage more than a one time sit down together.  The books are full of character building lessons.

Several new books in from Dawn Publications.  Most are sharing nature with children.  Dawn is known for the beautiful illustrations used in their books. Just received a new line of puzzles and some early age toys.  Coming to fast to mention here.  Will start highlighting the new toys next month.  New games from the makers of Bananagramss will be here next week.

GOOD NEWS FOR TEACHERS

Stenhouse publishers has agreed to sell to us.  They mostly do professional types of books and previously would only sell directly to schools.  Please use us for your needs, we will match prices if ever the need, and we do not charge shipping on special orders picked up here at the store.  Remember, shopping locally helps pay for our local firefighters, police, and the like!

WELCOME PENNY

We welcome Penny to our staff.  She worked with me many years ago at Pay N Pak before she was even married.  I "stole" her from McDonalds after watching her interact with their clients.  Now many years later she has returned from the Vancouver area with her family.  She brings to us retail experience, daycare experience, school volunteer experience, raising two teenage boys (still experiencing) and currently learning the ropes of raising a daughter.  Come in and say hi.  We are happy to have her with us.

That is it.  Time to get busy, have to get ready for brrrrr winter.  Besides, the next newsletter is due in less than half a month.

The words ‘racecar’, ‘kayak’, and ‘level’ are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes).  A customer shared with me two sentences that do the same thing, ‘go hang a salami’ and ‘I’m a lasagna hog’.
