Toolbox June Newsletter 2009

Summer greetings from the Toolbox.  Yes, indeed summer has hit…Finally!!  Last month, I seemed confused; as I wasn’t sure what season we were in.  According to the calendar we should have been in the season of spring but for many days, it seemed more like fall.  Well, guess I am not confused this month because I know we’re celebrating summer!!  Here’s to wishing all teachers, children, and their families a great summer of fun, relaxation, and many happy memories.  Congratulations to all graduating seniors! Blessings to you as you begin another exciting chapter in your life journey!!

More travels for Dwight and I as we traveled to Bellingham over Memorial Day weekend.  Son Dean had a “to do list” of yard work for him & Dad to complete along with 3 trips to the dump. Daughter in law Amanda decided to paint Marley’s bedroom so Grandma was in charge of keeping Marley and year old Maggie busy and not under foot of the workers.  After many walks around the block with Maggie, I think I could tell you the color of each house in the neighborhood.  But the best part was, dishes needed to be done, dinner needed to be started, but I set all those thoughts aside to just hang out with Maggie & Marley. We enjoyed warm sunny days in Bellingham. After a hard day of yard work, planting a small garden, son Dean barbecued hamburgers, and just kicked back relaxing in their backyard and watched the children play with the hose.

Next week we will be heading down to Vancouver to visit the other 2 Grandkids.  We will be attending Hockinson High School Baccalaureate service.  Our daughter Tammy (Spanish Teacher at the HS) has the honor of being one of the speakers.  She was asked to speak by the students.

That will be the end of our travels for a while!!  I’ve heard rumors that the Grandchildren will be coming our way as I think we have been assigned to care for them while mom & dad “run away” for a few days.

Happy 10th Birthday Academic Toolbox!  Yes, it is hard to believe that we have been in business for 10 years.  What a wonderful journey and it is because of you that we are able to celebrate.  So mark your calendar, Saturday June 20th, we will have a “birthday party”.  We will offer a 10% discount off an entire purchase, 10 pencils for a “buck”, and other surprises.  Stop by so we can “THANK YOU” for shopping at the Toolbox!!

Dwight recently read a book titled “Uncommon” written by Tony Dungy.  He thoroughly enjoyed the book and has purchased extra copies as he thinks it would be a great Father’s Day gift for those Dads who enjoy reading a truly inspirational book.  Dwight’s note:  If you don’t know, Tony was the coach of the Indianapolis Colts when they won the Super Bowl.  The book is full of practical ideas from his life story, with some scripture backing, and some sports analogies.  The book is easy to read and very inspirational trying to show each of us how to be “uncommon” in our life walk.  Will have at $19.99 instead of the regular price of  $24.99.

Will you be traveling this summer?  If so we have a variety of travel games and toy’s for all ages.  And if you’re going to visit Grandma & Grandpa or other friends or families we have games to take along.  Bananagrams, which is one of our number 1 selling game, Double Shutter, Blockus, Settlers of Catan and many more.  Also, don’t forget the Summer Bridge books to keep those brains engaged till next fall.

LAST MINUTE TEACHER GIFTS

We have a book titled Have You Filled a Bucket Today? which is a guide to daily happiness for kids.  I actually gave a copy as a thank you to my Sunday school teachers this year.  Cute story with a positive message that is a winner of seven awards.  Of course we also have gift certificates, which the teachers will appreciate.

WHAT’S NEW

The yellow wall behind the service counter looks new as it has a fresh coat of paint.  After all, it has been 10 years since the last boring white paint job.

Three new math games from Teacher Created Resources.  One is called Real World Math and it helps teach money concepts, personal finances, and even balancing the checkbook.  We remember the kids saying, “don’t you have a checkbook or credit card?” when told we could not afford to buy something.  Maybe this game will help stop that.  Designed for 2-6 players aged 8 and up.

From Patch Products is a nice travel pack of six games.  Some new puzzles from Melissa & Doug that are in a wooden frame.  New soft toys from Alex for the infant.

A new series from Evan-Moor Publishing Critical & Creative Thinking Activities in grades 1 through 6+ that are reproducible single page activities.  Also new from them is the Jumbo Fun with the Alphabet book that gives the teacher/parent a hear it, draw it, write it, read it, and make it activity for each letter of the alphabet.  It is also reproducible for classroom use and has 224 pages, some of which are teacher helps.

DRAWING WINNER

This month’s winner is Wendy Elias from Cashmere.  Wendy commented the last time she completed a frequent shopper card that she had never won our drawing before.  I believe she was one of our original shoppers.  Congratulations on your $25 win, and no it was not “fixed” because of your comment.
